DTF Office of the General Counsel
The Office of the General Counsel sits within the Office of the Secretary, with the General Counsel reporting directly to the Secretary. The Office comprises the functions of the Legal team (DTF Legal), Freedom of Information team and the Operations function.
The FOI team manages requests for access to departmental information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act).
The team promotes the object of the FOI Act, while managing risks of information release, consistent with government and WoVG policies.
Key accountabilities
- Process requests for access to documents under the FOI Act in accordance with Departmental processes and within strict timelines
- Work collaboratively and efficiently with other FOI team members and lawyers in DTF legal in relation to FOI requests to address issues arising under the FOI Act
- Contribute to robust, accurate and comprehensive file management, reporting and record keeping.
- Develop and maintain effective stakeholder relationships both internally and externally relating to FOI
- Research, analyse and prepare content for inclusion in communication strategies and assist with other public affairs tasks as required
- Assist with conducting FOI training across the Department
Key selection criteria
- Demonstrated experience in processing and determining requests made under the FOI Act, including the application of exemptions.
- Demonstrated initiative in undertaking diverse and complex tasks in a sensitive and confidential area within tight timelines.
- Strong communication and organisation skills with an ability to draft, manage and produce high-quality materials while dealing with competing priorities under time pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team with the commitment and motivation to deliver high quality results within the required statutory timeframes
- Proven experience in advising and influencing stakeholders in relation to FOI and related matters and the ability to cultivate and leverage networks.
Experience and qualifications
- Background and experience in a public sector FOI environment is desirable.
- Experience in the application of legislation would be well regarded.
- Experience providing advice and training.
