About this role
About the Role:
This ongoing role sits within the Legal Advisory team and is ideal for a senior lawyer who enjoys working across a broad range of complex and interesting legal matters.
As a Principal Lawyer, you'll provide high‑quality, practical and timely legal advice across areas including legislative reform, statutory interpretation, administrative law, employment law, privacy, FOI and corporate governance. You'll prepare clear, fit‑for‑purpose briefings, submissions and correspondence for a wide range of stakeholders, from internal teams through to senior leaders and government partners.
You'll also play an important leadership role within the Legal Services Unit, supporting the Managing Legal Counsel and General Counsel through reporting, knowledge sharing, and coaching and mentoring colleagues. A strong focus on the role is building trusted, collaborative relationships across the organisation and the broader government network, helping ensure legal advice is responsive, forward‑looking and aligned with BPC's strategic priorities.

What we are looking for:
We're keen to hear from lawyers who can demonstrate:
- Strong experience providing pragmatic, high‑quality legal advice in administrative law, employment law, corporate governance and legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and respond to emerging strategic risks, apply high ethical standards, exercise sound judgment and maintain impartiality, professionalism and integrity in decision‑making.
- A collaborative, relationship‑focused approach, with the ability to work effectively across teams and broader government, working collaboratively to achieve sound outcomes.
- Proven experience preparing clear, accurate and fit‑for‑purpose submissions, briefings and correspondence on complex and sensitive matters for wide range of stakeholders.
- Previous involvement in advising on and supporting legislative reform within a regulatory environment
Qualifications
- Admission as an Australian Legal Practitioner with a current practising certificate.

About the BPC
Established in 2025, the BPC is Victoria's new independent regulator for the building and plumbing industries. The BPC brings together the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), Domestic Building Dispute Resolution Victoria (DBDRV), and the domestic building insurance function of the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) into one organisation.
Key functions related to building and plumbing regulation have come together under one roof, including registration, inspection and compliance, practitioner discipline, dispute resolution, and domestic building insurance.
