About the role:
The Strategic Financial Performance Lead provides expert strategic and operational advice to strengthen financial sustainability, performance oversight, and value-for-money outcomes. The role leads the development and analysis of complex financial and performance insights, supports evidence‑based decision making at senior levels, and drives continuous improvement across planning, monitoring, and reporting processes. Working closely with executives and stakeholders, the Strategic Financial Performance Lead translates complex financial data into clear, actionable advice aligned to whole‑of‑government and departmental priorities.
The role is a great opportunity to demonstrate and build on the full set of public sector leadership skills, including collaborating and influencing across stakeholders, driving and reporting on priority matters, and managing risks. The role will grant exposure to senior stakeholders and decision makers and provides a good view of health system priorities and issues.

About you:
The Department of Health is seeking a Strategic Financial Performance Lead to drive financial strategy, performance improvement, and organisational outcomes across a complex operating environment. This role is responsible for translating strategic priorities into clear, long-term financial plans, ensuring alignment with broader organisational objectives while fostering a high-performing and committed team culture.
As a senior leader, you will demonstrate strong personal conviction and the ability to motivate others to deliver against shared goals. You will play a key role in influencing decision-making by building support for ideas, negotiating effectively, and leveraging both direct and indirect relationships to achieve outcomes. Your ability to engage experts and stakeholders will strengthen proposals and ensure sustainable, organisation-wide buy-in.
The role requires advanced problem-solving capability, including gathering and analysing information from multiple sources, engaging with stakeholders, and assessing issues from diverse perspectives. You will identify practical solutions, oversee their implementation, and continuously evaluate effectiveness to ensure optimal results.
Strong stakeholder management skills are essential. You will build and maintain productive partnerships by understanding stakeholder needs, identifying shared priorities, and navigating organisational contexts to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes. Your ability to resolve complex issues through innovative approaches will be critical.
You will also bring well-developed planning and organisational skills, setting clear priorities and establishing structured processes to achieve objectives. This includes anticipating challenges, allocating resources effectively, and implementing systems to monitor progress and adapt as needed.

Mandatory
- A tertiary qualification in fields related to health, business and/or management would be desirable.
- Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA) and/or Certified Practising Accountants of Australia (CPA)
- A strong understanding and knowledge of the policy context and direction of the Victorian health system, relevant departmental systems and environments.
On a personal level the candidate will be resilient and composed under pressure, able to navigate setbacks with a constructive mindset while working collaboratively and respectfully with others to achieve shared goals, and will demonstrate sound judgement by making timely, well-reasoned decisions even in complex or uncertain situations.
