The Magistrates' Court of Victoria is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) for future Trainee Court Registrar (TCR) opportunities across the Gippsland region.

About Us

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

About the Role

As a Trainee Court Registrar, you will be part of a workforce who facilitates the provision of justice to Victorian communities. You will provide quality administrative and customer service support to the judiciary and court users of the Magistrates' Court of Victoria.

Trainees Court Registrars (TCR) complete an 18-month internal training program to develop their skills and experience across a variety of court processes. On successful completion of the training program, TCR's can apply to become a Deputy Registrar which may then lead to a wide variety of roles throughout the Magistrates' Court and other jurisdictions.

The main duty of a TCR is bench clerking in a courtroom, either in a physical courtroom or online, dealing with a wide variety of cases. This involves:

• Supporting the magistrate or judicial registrar in the courtroom
• Making announcements and swearing in witnesses
• Operating a range of complex technology, including facilitating the audio recording of cases and using various case management systems and videoconferencing platforms
• Liaising with stakeholders such as police officers, legal representatives and other court users
• Coordinating the movement of parties within a fast-paced courtroom environment. 

 

When performing registrar duties outside of the courtroom, TCRs will assist with various duties in the registry including:

• Assisting a diverse range of stakeholders such as legal professionals and self-represented parties with their enquiries via telephone, email or at the counter
• Providing high-quality, face-to-face customer service in a fast-paced environment
• Handling complex or sensitive enquiries with professionalism and sound judgment
• Performing a range of administrative tasks as required.

Work Location, Gippsland Region

Vacancies may arise within the Gippsland region across Bairnsdale, Latrobe Valley, Korumburra/Wonthaggi and Sale. Applicants will be asked to list their preferred locations during the application process. Future opportunities and work locations will be determined by operational requirements and available vacancies.

TCRs may be required to travel to and work at other court venues within the Gippsland region to support operational requirements. Gippsland region court locations include:

• Bairnsdale

• Korrumburra
• Latrobe Valley
• Moe
• Orbost
• Sale
• Wonthaggi

This role is full-time and based on site.

About You

As a preferred candidate, you will have:

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and confidence in public speaking
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with ability to manage competing priorities under pressure
• High proficiency in using technology and confidence working across a range of software systems
• A collaborative mindset and strong commitment to delivering high-quality service in a team-oriented environment
• A valid Australian State or Territory driver licence
