Position Details

Chief Transport Counsel

This is a dual role as Transport for Victoria's most senior lawyer with responsibility for transport-related legal matters and responsibility for the leadership of the Transport Legislation and Legal Branch within the Policy & Reform Division of Transport for Victoria, Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources.

The role is also Transport for Victoria's chief legal counsel in providing high level and strategic advice to the Head, Transport for Victoria and within Transport for Victoria, and is required to maintain strong and effective relationships with the General Counsel, DEDJTR, and transport portfolio agencies and key stakeholders within the public sector including the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office, the Office of Chief Parliamentary Counsel, Department of Premier and Cabinet and counterpart roles in other transport agencies. 

As Executive Director, Transport Legislation and Legal, the role is responsible for leading and managing a team of staff to deliver high quality and timely advice on a wide range of legal and legislative issues to the Head, Transport for Victoria and Transport for Victoria and maintaining robust legal governance frameworks across Transport for Victoria to ensure that strategic priorities are achieved and supported by appropriate legal, legislative, policy, regulatory and compliance advice.

The role also provides advice, in conjunction with the General Counsel, DEDJTR, to the Secretary, Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, and Transport Ministers, in connection with transport-related matters.

The candidate will have extensive experience at a senior level in the public sector with an excellent understanding of the workings of government including legal, legislative and regulatory requirements. In addition to having the requisite qualifications and admission to practice as a lawyer in Victoria the candidate would be recognised within the legal profession as an expert, exhibiting well-developed and considered judgement and professional ethics and integrity.
