Position Details

Senior Lawyers play a key role within the VBA Legal Services' Litigation team. Reporting to the solicitor with responsibility for managing the Litigation team, Senior Lawyers provide robust legal services to primarily support the VBA's litigation and enforcement functions.

This position partners closely with client groups across the VBA and provides authoritative legal advice on a wide range of prosecutions, disciplinary proceedings, civil litigation, and administrative law matters to internal stakeholders.   

In addition to undertaking all aspects of solicitor work on litigation files, Senior Lawyers also provide advocacy services, appearing on behalf of the VBA before Federal and Victorian courts of all levels, the AAT, VCAT, coronial inquests, tribunals and related forums.

Who we are looking for

  • Proven experience providing advice on evidence and appearing before courts and tribunals in relation to summary prosecutions, disciplinary inquiries, and administrative challenges against government decisions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the processes and key issues involved in enforcement and appeals against decisions made under the Building Act 1993 (Vic) and related legislation, or a similar regulatory scheme.
  • Demonstrated understanding of administrative law and statutory interpretation principles and being able to apply those principles in the context of decision making in a regulatory context.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on complex matters of statutory interpretation and administrative law in a government context.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage, manage and influence stakeholders, build effective working relationships at all levels and present complex information in an easily understood format
