About the role:
The Victim Legal Service (VLS) is a collaborative initiative of the Victorian legal assistance sector. Victoria Legal Aid is establishing a new VLS Helpline providing accessible and holistic intake and referral aimed at ensuring victims of crime are provided with the appropriate services to support their legal needs.

We have excellent opportunities for a Senior Lawyer and three Lawyers to join Victoria Legal Aid to contribute to the Victims Legal Service by providing timely information, legal advice and referrals to victims of crime in matters relating to compensation, restitution and financial assistance, and a range of ancillary legal matters in the family, criminal and/or civil law jurisdictions.

We have multiple maximum term roles available up to 12 months:

  • 1x part time (0.8FTE) Senior Lawyer role (VLA4)
  • 3x fulltime Lawyer roles (VLA3, part time considered)

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Senior Lawyer will lead and supervise the team of Lawyers in the Victim Legal Services team, by providing legal supervision, mentoring, training, and contributing to the professional development of the team. You will also assist in the development of strategies to improve access to justice, including representing VLA in consultations and working groups.

These roles do not involve ongoing case work or court advocacy.

About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience supporting Victims of Crime, through Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT) and/or Restitution and Compensation Order (RACO) matters and a range of ancillary matters in family, criminal and or civil law jurisdiction.
  • Strong problem solving and legal diagnostic skills to accurately identify and support the needs of victims of crime, using a trauma informed approach.
  • Stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to positively engage with key partner agencies and/or their workers to appropriately manage referrals.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and your demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment.
  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner.
  • Ability to supervise legal work and to mentor and train staff and contribute to the development of individuals and their knowledge and skills in the Victims Legal Service team (Senior Lawyer role only).
