- Seeking lawyers for short term positions in VLA's various office locations
- Flexible working arrangements, full time and part time options
- Undertake case work and regularly appear in duty lawyer lists
- Salary commensurate with experience, range: $62,039 - $80,283 plus superannuation
- Attractive employee benefits including salary packaging
About the role:
We invite applicants with experience in either criminal, civil or family law who have an interest in social justice and can work under pressure. We are looking for lawyers who can deliver high volume client services and handle busy court lists to effectively represent VLA's unique and diverse client base.
You will appear in various courts and tribunals, conduct casework, provide legal information and advice, including to clients in custody or members of the public by appointment, phone or teleconference and via outreach visiting services, while providing appropriate referrals to other agencies or services where required.
You will also develop and maintain collaborative relationships with relevant VLA staff, court staff, community legal centres and other social justice organisations to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to improving access to justice.
You will have a strong commitment to human rights, social justice and VLA's values, with the capacity to deliver duty lawyer services, case work and advice sessions relating to various legal matters. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to obtain clear instructions, explain complex legal matters in simple terms, and make effective decisions while under pressure.
You will also have a good understanding of the underlying systemic issues contributing to our client's legal issues and the important role external organisations, community and welfare groups play in providing appropriate services. You will seek out opportunities to improve client services and resolve legal problems that affect many people and focus on early intervention before clients reach crisis point.
Upon commencement you must be admitted to practice in Victoria or another Australian jurisdiction. We can be flexible with your working days and areas of interest.
