About the role:
We are seeking a self-motivated lawyer to work within Victoria Legal Aid's (VLA) Health Justice Partnership with Sunraysia Community Health Services in Mildura. In this role you will focus on working within the community to prevent and address legal problems at the earliest opportunity through targeted community legal education and engagement.

You will provide legal services including information, advice, and conducting casework predominately in child protection matters to vulnerable clients with complex legal and non-legal needs.

To promote a holistic service, you will need to be willing to gain knowledge and provide advice in other legal areas connected to the primary legal issue, including civil law and family violence matters. You will also participate in education activities designed to support health workers and service providers to identify and respond to signs of legal need.

About you:
You are a dedicated lawyer with a strong interest and/or experience in child protection matters. You demonstrate a willingness to give referrals and initial advice in other legal areas including mental health and disability law, tenancy, social security and infringements.

You have experience providing advocacy, advice and conducting casework to vulnerable clients with complex needs, or show a strong interest in developing these skills. You have a good understanding of the key challenges vulnerable individuals and groups experience accessing legal services, particularly in regional and rural areas.

Crucial to your success in this role are your interpersonal and communications skills, and ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable clients and stakeholders. Knowledge and/or experience in other legal areas including mental health and disability law, tenancy, social security and infringements will be highly regarded, but not essential.

About Victoria Legal Aid:
Our vision is for a fair and just society where rights and responsibilities are upheld. With over 800 staff employed in 15 offices across Victoria, we help people with their legal problems by providing information, advice and education with a focus on the prevention and early resolution of legal problems. We also provide legal representation to those who need it most.

Employee benefits:
We offer attractive employment benefits including salary packaging (making part of your salary tax-free), flexible working arrangements, family friendly policies and opportunities for professional development. Whilst the work is challenging, you will be rewarded with a culture that is focused on achieving quality outcomes for disadvantaged Victorians.

How to apply:
Please submit a current resume and completed candidate application form (listed within the file attachments). You must complete the candidate application form to be considered for this role, separate responses to the KSC outlined in the position description are not required. Please also include the contact details of two referees.
