About the role:
Victoria Legal Aid's (VLA) Legal Help service is the entry point for Victorians seeking legal assistance, supporting over 120,000 clients over the telephone and livechat each year by providing information and legal advice on a wide variety of legal matters and referrals to legal and non-legal services. This advice and information is communicated in English and over 16 other languages. We assist clients who are vulnerable, stressed and often in circumstances where their safety is threatened. Legal Help Officers and Lawyers play a crucial role in delivering VLA's triaging model. This is a unique service providing accessible and holistic intake and referral aimed at ensuring Victorians are provided with the appropriate services to support their legal needs.

About you:
You are a pro-active problem solver with the capacity to diagnose legal problems to accurately identify and address client needs. You have a sound understanding of referral service practices and knowledge of legal, community and welfare organisations. You are a supportive team player who actively contributes to a positive team environment while working under pressure and come equipped with excellent communication skills. You will also have an understanding of the challenges vulnerable and disadvantaged clients face when accessing legal services.

The Legal Help Officer role will suit candidates who are currently studying law or paralegals.

The Legal Help Lawyer role is an excellent opportunity for lawyers, interested in a mixed practice of Family, Criminal and Civil Law, who want flexible or structured working hours without the responsibility of ongoing casework.

Post admission practice experience, prior experience in contact centres and fluency in a language other than English will be highly regarded. These roles do not involve court advocacy.

About Victoria Legal Aid:
Our vision is for a fair and just society where rights and responsibilities are upheld. With over 1000 staff employed in 15 offices across Victoria, we help people with their legal problems by providing information, advice and education with a focus on the prevention and early resolution of legal problems. We also provide legal representation to those who need it most.

Employee benefits:
We offer attractive employment benefits including salary packaging (making part of your salary tax-free), flexible working arrangements under a hybrid work model, family friendly policies and opportunities for professional development. Whilst the work is challenging, you will be rewarded with a culture that is focused on achieving quality outcomes for disadvantaged Victorians.

Information about the talent pool and how to apply:
The talent pool will be used to fill full time and part time maximum term vacancies across our Legal Help team over the coming six months. Should you be identified for a suitable position, you will be contacted regarding next steps.

Submit a current resume and completed candidate application form (listed within the file attachments as a Word document). You must complete the candidate application form to be considered for this role, separate responses to the KSC outlined in the position description are not required. Please also include the contact details of two referees.

VLA employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. It is also a requirement that staff attend for office-based days at their primary work location. In line with this requirement, interstate applications will be considered only where the candidate is able and willing to relocate to Victoria, unless part of a border community.

VLA is committed to putting the safety and wellbeing of children first.

For further information review the attached position description or contact Kerry Townsend, Deputy Managing Lawyer on (03) 9280 3847.

No agency applications will be accepted.

Applications close by 11.59pm on Sunday, 4 September 2022.
