Position details
  • Two ongoing full-time positions available
  • Salary based on experience, range: VLA3 $80,024 - $95,992; VLA 4 $95,993 - $119,989 plus super

About the role:
In this role you will act as an advocate by providing high quality legal services including duty lawyer services, casework and advice services in civil law matters that most affect people's rights, such as mental health and disability law, tenancy, social security, NDIS and fines. You will also participate in community legal education and develop collaborative relationships between VLA and local stakeholders.

We have two full time ongoing roles available:

  • Senior Civil Lawyer (VLA4)
  • Civil Lawyer (VLA3)

In addition to the above responsibilities, our Senior Lawyers provide legal supervision, mentoring, training, and contribute to the professional development of less experienced lawyers and assist in the development of strategies to improve access to justice, including representing VLA in consultations and working groups.

About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in providing quality legal services with a focus on the civil law jurisdiction, including strong advocacy experience and sound knowledge of civil law procedures.
  • Stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to positively engage with key partner agencies and/or their workers to appropriately manage referrals and to promote services within community settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and your demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment
  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner.
  • Ability to supervise legal work and to mentor and train staff and contribute to the development of individuals and their knowledge and skills in civil law (Senior Civil Lawyer role only)
