The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Principal Practice Advisor to provide a critical role within the Counter Terrorism Coordination unit.
About the Business Unit
Counter Terrorism Coordination (CTC) within Sentence Management Division, is responsible for the operational strategic direction of Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) across Corrections Victoria and Justice Services. CTC ensures that CJS' approach to CVE evolves with current and emerging evidence of good practice in the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals at risk of committing or who have committed religiously or ideologically motivated violent extremism.
CTC has direct oversight of the operational implementation of the Continuing Detention Order scheme and the governance of the Extended Supervision Order scheme under the Commonwealth High Risk Terrorist Offender post sentence legislation. CTC is the conduit between Corrections Victoria and the Attorney General's Department regarding the application, review and breach of both Continuing Detention and Extended Supervision Orders.
CTC works closely with a range of internal stakeholders including Complex Classification Unit, Corrections Victoria Intelligence Unit, Forensic Intervention Services and Parole Central Unit, as well as external stakeholders including Victoria Police, Attorney General's Department, Australian Federal Police and the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office.
About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Operations, the Principal Practice Advisor is responsible for overseeing governance functions relating to the operation of the CVE Service Delivery Model, undertakes various projects to strengthen the model and coordinates CV's HRTO activities.
The role will work closely with internal stakeholders such as the Major Offenders Unit, Corrections Victoria Intelligence Unit, Forensic Intervention Services and Parole Central Unit and external stakeholders such as Victoria Police, Attorney General's Department, Australian Federal Police and the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office.
As a Principal Practice Advisor, some of your duties will include:
- Providing expert advice and support to operational staff managing individuals in the adult correctional system who pose a violent extremism risk or have been convicted of terrorism offences.
- Engaging with various internal and external stakeholders to mitigate risk of violent extremism and strengthen the CVE Service Delivery Model.
- Supporting the operational implementation and governance of the Commonwealth High Risk Terrorist Offender post sentence legislation.
- Preparing complex reports and high-level briefings.
- Supporting the ongoing identification of training needs of operational staff and work with the CVE Senior Workforce Development Officer to develop and implement relevant training packages.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Knowledge of the corrections and criminal justice environment.
- Experience in risk identification and management, whether prison or CCS based.
- Ability to prepare high-quality written material with demonstrated analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal communication and stakeholder management skills.
Qualifications/requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification would be highly regarded.
