The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer – Maintenance to provide a critical role at Langi Kal Kal.
About the Business Unit
H.M Prison Langi Kal Kal is a minimum-security men's protection prison located 140km west of Melbourne at Trawalla. The prison's primary purpose is the reintegration and preparedness of people in our car for transition to release. H.M. Prison Langi Kal Kal is made up of eight separate industries & services: Farm, Horticulture, Landmate, Kitchen, Metal fab, Poultry, Textiles & Warehouse, where there is a strong focus on employment training, and work readiness.
About the Role
Reporting to and under the guidance of the Industry Supervisor – Maintenance, an Industry Officer – Maintenance is responsible for management and delivery of facilities maintenance and environmental services. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate the people in our care.
Industry Officers – Maintenance assist with the management of people in our care employment, safe operating procedures and other OH&S legislative requirements, and compliance with industry procedures. Conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing the people in our care's behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information, and preparing reports. An Industry Officer – Maintenance plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing, and reviewing practice and procedures relating to the recently released Corrections Practice Framework.
As some of the Prison Industries operate 7 days a week, Industry Officers may be required to work across a 7-day roster
Some of your duties will include:
- Lead, manage and develop the people in our care while performing facilities maintenance and environmental services to ensure the safety and security of people in our care, staff, and visitors. This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring people in our care for compliance with security and safety procedure.
- Monitor and achieve targets in an industrial environment including administrative tasks related to financial budgets, materials and supplier's records and accounts, while maintaining work production schedules.
- Liaise with internal staff and external stakeholders and provide analytical and informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.
- Train and instruct the people in our care in positive work habits and ensure implementation of safe practices in the workplace.
- Supervise people in our care within work environment with detailed attention to operating plant or equipment and ensure that adherence to compliance codes and the OH&S Act.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Completion of (or willingness to undertake) Prison Officer Pre-Service Training.
- Trade Qualification or extensive experience in the Building Industry (preferred).
- Relevant experience and knowledge of OH&S in an industry setting (desirable).
- Good computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (expected).
Qualifications/requirements
- Appropriate trade qualifications or equivalent relevant trade skills (desirable).
- Relevant experience in vocational education and training environment (desirable).
- Current Forklift License (desirable).
- Medium Rigid Truck License (desirable).
- Completion of Prison Officer Pre-Service Training (mandatory).
