The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Secretary, to provide a critical role within Justice Human Research Ethics Committee
About the Business Unit
The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) delivers a justice and community safety system that works to build a safer, fairer and stronger Victoria. Corporate Strategy and Delivery (CSD) is responsible for delivering whole of department enabling functions that provide specialised services to enhance the department's overall efficiency and effectiveness. This includes delivery of services provided within the People, Safety, Culture and Communications group, key public accountability requirements including finance, asset management, procurement, risk management, audit, governance, climate change and environmental sustainability and statutory planning and related functions. The group also manages the governance and delivery of major infrastructure projects through the Community Safety Building Authority, and information and communications technology (ICT), including cyber and information security management.
The Justice and Human Research Ethics Committee (JHREC) is convened by the Secretary of the Department of Justice and Community Safety. Its function is to conduct ethical reviews of research and evaluations to protect the welfare and rights of participants in research. JHREC ensures that research proposals conform to the principles and requirements of the National Health and Medical Research Council's National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023). The Secretary, JHREC provides a range of support and secretariate functions to the committee, ensuring its smooth operation.

About the Role
Some of your duties will include:
- Provide secretariat services to the Justice Human Research Ethics Committee (JHREC) including quality assuring submissions for completeness, co ordinating agendas, meetings, minutes and facilitating communications with researchers and records management.
- Manage the JHREC membership including resignations, retirements and appointment of members.
- Manage key JHREC resources including the website.
- Establish and maintain strong stakeholder relationships with the JHREC members and key stakeholders within the department and statutory agencies, including the Corrections Victoria Research Committee, the National Coronial Information Service, groups across the Department who conduct research as well as Victoria Police and the Coroner's Court of Victoria.
- Lead and manage ethical policy components of the JHREC work program, including the drafting and preparation of reports, correspondence, publications and briefings on behalf of the JHREC.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Proven experience/knowledge with provision of secretariat/management /support services and expert advice to committees, workshops and forums, in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to quickly comprehend the ethics approval process, the underlying National Statement, and the role of the Human Research Ethics Committee in the Australian research environment.
- Provides high level expertise and deals with complex issues in a specialised corporate support function.
Qualifications/requirements
- A relevant qualification or equivalent experience is desirable.
